Across the Floor: Double Irish

I used these sequences with my beginner class to drill basic steps and rhythm.

Double Irish: shuffle ballchange, shuffle hop step
-----
Basic Sequence:
4 flap ballchanges, RLRL
Double Irish R
Double Irish L
-----
Rhythm Sequence:
2 flap ballchanges, R L [&1&2 &3&4]
hold hold [5 6]
ballchange ballchange [&7 &8]
double irish R [&1&2 &3&4]
hold [5]
ballchange [&6]
hold [7]
ballchange [&8]
-----

Tips & Variations:
  • For beginners who struggle with timing, begin with claps where the 'holds' are. Once they seem to have mastered the timing, remove the claps, but tell them to imagine clapping in their head where the hold is.
  • Play around with the placement of holds once your class develops a better sense of timing to challenge them. Or split them into groups and have them create their own version of the combination.
